MoonPay is where a lot of people buy their first crypto, usually with a card, often inside another app. That purchase is the most important record you have, because it sets what your coins cost.
It does more than buying now. You can sell, swap between assets, and hold a balance with MoonPay rather than moving everything out immediately.
Unlike most services of this kind, MoonPay gives you a proper export, so getting your history out is straightforward.
What you get out of the box
Pick your import method.
On MoonPay
- Go to your MoonPay account and sign in with your email and the code they send you.
- Open Settings, then Trade activity.
- Open the options menu and choose Export in CSV.
On Kryptos
- Log in to Kryptos.
- Go to Integrations.
- Click Add Integration, then search for and select MoonPay.
- Click the MoonPay icon and choose Upload CSV.
- Upload the file. Kryptos reads it and categorises the transactions for you.
Good to know
- The exchange rate you were shown already includes MoonPay's margin, so the fee line in your export is not the whole cost.
- If you swapped one coin for another, that is a sale and a purchase rather than a simple exchange.
- If you keep a balance with MoonPay rather than withdrawing, that balance is a holding like any other.
Why the purchase matters more than anything else
For most people MoonPay appears once, near the beginning: you bought some crypto with a card and it went to your wallet. Then nothing. It is easy to treat that as a footnote.
It is the opposite of a footnote. Buying crypto is not itself taxable, but it establishes what those coins cost you, and that number is subtracted from the proceeds every time you sell any of them. Lose it and a tax authority may treat the entire sale as gain.
There is a wrinkle in getting that number right. MoonPay builds its margin into the exchange rate you are quoted, rather than adding it as a separate line at the end. The practical effect is that the fee shown on your receipt is not the full cost of the transaction, so the reliable figure is the total that left your bank or card. That whole amount is what the crypto cost you.
One more thing worth checking. MoonPay is often embedded inside other apps and wallets, so plenty of people have used it without registering the name. If you have crypto and cannot account for where it came from, searching your email for MoonPay receipts is a good place to start. For how cost basis works where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Setting the cost of your first purchase
What you paid, including everything taken out of your bank or card, is what the coins cost you. Without it, a later sale can look like pure profit.
Recording a swap
Swapping one asset for another disposes of the first and acquires the second. It is two events, not a neutral exchange.
Accounting for a balance you left behind
Anything still sitting with MoonPay is a holding, and it belongs in your position even though you did not move it anywhere.
Audit-ready, automatically.
Once your wallets and exchanges are connected, generating a tax report takes a single click. Open Reports from the menu, choose your jurisdiction, and download.
The purchase is what sets your cost
Buying is not a taxable event by itself, but it establishes what your coins cost. That figure is subtracted from the proceeds whenever you eventually sell, so getting it right matters more than anything else on this page.
Use the full amount you paid
MoonPay builds its margin into the rate you are quoted rather than showing it as a separate line. So the fee shown in your export understates the real cost, and the reliable figure is the total that left your bank or card.
A swap is a disposal
Exchanging one asset for another is a sale of the first at its value that day. This is the most commonly missed event on services people think of as places to buy.
Selling back to cash is a disposal
Selling crypto for fiat realises whatever gain or loss has built up since you acquired it.
Read-only by design.
- A file upload is read-only. Nothing connects to your account
- Kryptos never asks for your password or login details
- Delete an import at any time and its data goes with it
- Keep the original file: it is your evidence if anyone asks later
If something doesn't sync.
MoonPay includes its margin in the rate rather than itemising it. Work from the total amount debited rather than the fee line.
The export covers buying and selling. If you also swapped or held a balance, check that those appear and add them manually if not.
It is often built into other apps and wallets, so you may have used it without noticing. Check the email address you use for crypto.
