Mode

Mode is a network built on top of Ethereum, part of the same family as Optimism. Fees are paid in ETH that you bring over from Ethereum. MODE, the network's own token, is for staking and voting rather than for fees.

Unlike most networks of this kind, Mode isn't mainly a trading venue. The activity here sits in restaking and lending positions rather than swaps, so a typical history is a handful of positions held over time rather than a stream of trades.

The detail worth knowing before you start: staking MODE pays rewards in OP, on Optimism, not on Mode. Those rewards never appear in your Mode history at all.

What you get out of the box

ETH and token transfers, with fees paid in ETH
Restaking positions through Renzo
Lending on Ionic, Sturdy and Ironclad
Swaps on KIM and other Mode exchanges
MODE staking, and the OP rewards it pays on Optimism
Bridging to and from Ethereum
Airdrops across the governance seasons

On Mode

  1. Open the wallet you use for Mode. MetaMask and most others work.
  2. Copy your wallet address. It's the same one you use on Ethereum.
  3. If you've staked MODE, add your Optimism wallet too. The rewards are paid there rather than on Mode.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Mode.
  4. Click the Mode icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Why your Mode rewards aren't on Mode

Staking MODE is straightforward enough to do. Where it gets confusing is where the rewards turn up.

They're paid in OP, Optimism's token, on the Optimism network. Not in MODE, and not on Mode. So you can stake for a year, earn steadily, and see nothing at all in the wallet you staked from. Meanwhile OP builds up somewhere you weren't looking.

There's a second trap in the same place. After you unstake there's a waiting period before the tokens are yours to move, and unstaking a further amount restarts that period rather than running alongside it. People get caught expecting one clock and finding they started a new one. Add both your Mode and Optimism wallets and the whole picture assembles. For how staking income is treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Rewards paid on another network

Staking MODE earns OP, which arrives on Optimism rather than on Mode. Look only at your Mode wallet and the rewards are invisible. Add both and they line up with the stake that earned them.

Positions rather than trades

Mode activity is mostly restaking and lending held over months. Depositing into those isn't selling, and what comes back is income, which is a different shape from a trading history.

Several airdrops, several dates

Mode has run distributions across multiple governance seasons, so one wallet can have several separate receipts, each needing its own value on its own date.

Audit-ready, automatically.

Once your wallets and exchanges are connected, generating a tax report takes a single click. Open Reports from the menu, choose your jurisdiction, and download.

Depositing isn't selling

Supplying assets to a lending or restaking app moves them but leaves you with the exposure. Recorded as a trade, each deposit invents a gain that never happened.

Restaking tokens are separate assets

When you restake and receive a token representing the position, that token is its own asset with its own cost, distinct from the ETH behind it.

Staking rewards land somewhere else

MODE staking pays in OP on Optimism. It's still income from your Mode position, but you won't find it by looking at Mode.

Funds lost in a protocol may be a loss

If assets were lost when a protocol you used was exploited, that may be claimable as a loss. Rules vary by country and usually turn on showing the assets are genuinely gone rather than merely stuck.

Read-only by design.

  • Kryptos only ever needs your public wallet address
  • A public address is read-only. It can't move or spend anything
  • We never ask for your recovery phrase or private key
  • Remove a wallet whenever you like, and its data goes with it

If something doesn't sync.

My staking rewards are missing

They're paid in OP on Optimism, not on Mode. Add your Optimism wallet and they'll appear.

I unstaked but the tokens haven't arrived

There's a waiting period after unstaking, and unstaking more restarts the clock rather than running alongside it.

A lending position shows the wrong value

Add every wallet that touched it. A partial wallet list gives a partial position.
