Internet Computer Protocol (ICP)

The Internet Computer works differently from most networks, and two of those differences change what you need to import.

The first is that you do not pay gas. Apps pay for their own running costs, so using one is free. The only fee a normal user meets is a small charge on ICP transfers.

The second is that your wallet has more than one address, depending on what is being sent to you. Getting that wrong is the usual reason a balance looks incomplete.

On the Internet Computer

  1. Open your wallet and copy your principal, the long string of letters in groups separated by dashes.
  2. Copy your account identifier as well, the long string of letters and numbers with no dashes. Both belong to the same wallet and each receives different assets.
  3. If you have staked, your neurons hold that ICP separately. Kryptos reads them from your principal.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Internet Computer.
  4. Click the Internet Computer icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Good to know

  • Staked ICP does not appear in your wallet balance. It sits inside a neuron, which is why a staker's balance looks smaller than their holdings.
  • Internet Identity gives you a different principal for each app you log into, so one person can hold many unrelated-looking addresses.
  • Rewards build up inside a neuron as maturity, which is not a token and does not appear on any transaction list.

One wallet, two addresses, and the balance that goes missing

Most networks give you one address and everything arrives there. The Internet Computer gives you two, and which one to use depends on what is being sent.

Your principal is your identity: a long string of letters in dash-separated groups. Your account identifier is a long run of letters and numbers with no dashes. They belong to the same wallet. ICP itself is usually received at the account identifier, while newer tokens use the principal.

Send the wrong sort of asset to the wrong one and it either bounces or lands somewhere awkward. More often for record keeping, people import one address, see part of their holdings, and conclude something has gone wrong.

There is a third source of surprise. Internet Identity generates a different principal for every app you log into, on purpose, so that apps cannot link you across services. Good for privacy, confusing at tax time, because one person legitimately holds many addresses that look unrelated. Add each one that holds a balance. Neurons, maturity, and rewards you cannot see

Staking on the Internet Computer means locking ICP into a neuron. The ICP leaves your wallet and sits inside the neuron, which is the first thing that makes balances look wrong: a staker's wallet shows a fraction of what they own.

Rewards then behave unlike almost any other network. They do not arrive as tokens. They accrue as maturity, a number held inside the neuron that you cannot send, sell or spend. No transaction records it. Nothing lands anywhere.

To turn maturity into ICP you disburse it, which takes about a week and applies an adjustment on the way out. That adjustment can raise or lower the payout, so a neuron showing a given amount of maturity does not produce that amount of ICP. Alternatively you can merge maturity back into the stake, which compounds it and produces no ICP and no record whatsoever.

This leaves the tax question genuinely open. Under one reading, maturity is income as it accrues, because it is value you have earned. Under another, nothing is received until ICP exists, which is at disbursement. No tax authority has ruled on it, and the two readings can produce quite different numbers in a volatile year. We are not going to pretend there is a settled answer. Bring it up with an accountant who works in your country.

One correction worth making, because nearly every article online still repeats it: the maximum waiting period on a neuron is two years, not eight. It was shortened, and old neurons were moved across.

Finding a balance that looks too small

Staked ICP lives inside a neuron rather than in your wallet, so the number in your wallet app is not your holdings. Kryptos reads both.

Recording rewards from a neuron

Rewards accrue as maturity, an internal figure with no transaction behind it. Nothing lands in your wallet until you disburse, and the amount that arrives is not the amount that accrued.

Tracking one wallet across several addresses

The same wallet receives ICP at one address and other tokens at another. Import both and your holdings stop looking like two different people.

Maturity has no settled treatment

Rewards accrue inside a neuron as maturity, which cannot be sold, sent or spent, and no ICP exists until you disburse it. Whether that is income as it accrues or only when disbursed is genuinely unsettled, and no tax authority has ruled. Worth asking an accountant in your country rather than assuming.

The amount you get is not the amount you earned

Disbursing maturity applies an adjustment that can push the payout above or below the accrued figure, and it takes about a week. So the ICP that arrives will not match the maturity that built up, and only the arriving amount is real.

Merging maturity leaves no record at all

Rolling maturity back into your stake compounds it without producing any ICP and without any transaction. Nothing shows up anywhere, which is exactly why it gets missed.

Buying cycles is a disposal of ICP

Developers convert ICP into cycles to pay for running an app. The ICP is destroyed and cycles cannot be converted back, so it is a one-way disposal rather than a transfer.

Unstaking takes as long as your waiting period

A neuron has a waiting period of up to two years before you can take the ICP back. Starting to dissolve is not a disposal; it just begins the clock.

  • A public address is read-only. It can't move or spend anything
  • We never ask for your recovery phrase or private key
  • Remove a wallet whenever you like, and its data goes with it

If something doesn't sync.

My balance is missing my staked ICP

Staked ICP is held inside neurons, not in your wallet. Kryptos reads your neurons from your principal, so make sure the principal is imported and not only the account identifier.

My tokens arrived but my ICP did not

The two use different addresses. ICP goes to your account identifier and most other tokens go to your principal. Check which one you gave the sender.

I have more addresses than I expected

Internet Identity creates a separate principal for each app you sign into. They are all yours. Add the ones holding a balance.
