Agoric

Agoric is a network whose applications are written in ordinary JavaScript. Your address starts with agoric1 rather than 0x.

It has two tokens that do different jobs. BLD is what you stake and what fees are paid in. IST is a dollar-pegged token you create by borrowing against collateral.

One quirk to know before importing: an address on its own cannot use applications here. A smart wallet has to be set up for it first, and that costs BLD.

What you get out of the box

BLD transfers and fees
Staking, unstaking and reward claims
IST minting and repayment against collateral
Vault positions and the interest they accrue
Transfers in and out from other Cosmos networks
Smart wallet provisioning

Pick your import method.

On Agoric

  1. Open Keplr or your wallet and copy your address. It starts with agoric1.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Agoric.
  4. Click the Agoric icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Good to know

  • Fees are paid in BLD. Some documentation still describes IST as the fee token, but the chain charges in BLD.
  • Using an application means making an offer rather than sending tokens, so activity does not look like ordinary transfers.
  • Unstaking takes 21 days, which can straddle a tax year end.

Two tokens, and which one pays the fees

Agoric runs on two tokens with clearly separated jobs, and there is a documentation wrinkle worth knowing about.

BLD is the network's own token. You stake it, you vote with it, and fees are deducted in it. IST is a dollar-pegged token that you create rather than buy: you lock collateral into a vault, mint IST against it, and repay later with interest.

The wrinkle is that Agoric's own documentation in several places describes IST as the network's fee token. On the running chain, fees are charged in BLD. Both descriptions have a history behind them, but for working out what a transaction cost you, BLD is what left your balance.

The IST side is where the more interesting tax question sits. Minting IST is borrowing. You still own the collateral you locked, so nothing was disposed of, and the IST is borrowed money rather than income. Interest accrues while the position is open and settles when you repay.

The exception is liquidation. If your collateral falls too far in value and the position is closed against you, that collateral is genuinely sold, at the price it fetched, whether or not you were watching. That is a disposal and it belongs on your return. For how borrowing and liquidations are treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Why your transaction list looks so empty

Import an Agoric address and you may see far less than you expect, even after a busy year. That is a consequence of how the network is built rather than a gap in the data.

On most chains, using an application means sending tokens to a contract. The transfer is the record, and any tool that reads transfers sees your activity. Agoric works differently: you make an offer, which the application either accepts or declines, and the whole exchange is handled by your smart wallet rather than by a series of token sends.

So a plain transfer history shows almost nothing of what you did. The trades happened, the positions exist, but they are not shaped like transfers.

This also explains a common first-time problem. An address alone cannot use applications at all: a smart wallet has to be provisioned for it first, which costs a small amount of BLD. Until that happens the address can hold and send tokens but not do anything else, which surprises people who have funded an account and cannot work out why nothing works.

Manage your Agoric portfolio with Kryptos.

Borrowing IST against collateral

Locking collateral to mint IST is a loan, not a sale. Interest builds while the position is open and settles when you repay.

Claiming staking rewards

Rewards accrue without appearing in your balance and stay there until you claim. The claim is when you received them.

Tracking activity that is not a transfer

Applications here work through offers rather than token sends, so a tool looking only for transfers will miss most of what you did.

Audit-ready, automatically.

Once your wallets and exchanges are connected, generating a tax report takes a single click. Open Reports from the menu, choose your jurisdiction, and download.

Minting IST is borrowing, not selling

You lock collateral and receive IST against it. The collateral is still yours, so nothing was disposed of. Repaying returns it, and interest accrued along the way is a cost of the loan.

A liquidation is a disposal

If a vault falls below its required collateral and is liquidated, the collateral is sold. That is a real disposal at the liquidation price, whether or not you chose it.

Staking rewards are income when claimed

Rewards do not compound on their own here. They wait until you send a claim, and the claim date sets the value.

Assets arriving from other networks can carry different names

The same asset can appear under different identifiers depending on the route it took to get here. One holding may look like several if the identifiers are treated as different assets.

Read-only by design.

  • Kryptos only ever needs your public wallet address
  • A public address is read-only. It can't move or spend anything
  • We never ask for your recovery phrase or private key
  • Remove a wallet whenever you like, and its data goes with it

If something doesn't sync.

I cannot use any applications

An address needs a smart wallet set up before it can interact with contracts, and that costs a small amount of BLD.

My activity does not show as transactions

Applications here work through offers rather than plain transfers, so ordinary transfer lists show very little of what happened.

My staking rewards are missing

They accrue outside your balance until you claim them. Send a claim and they arrive.
