How crypto is taxed
In the UK, HMRC treats most crypto as an asset, so disposing of it triggers Capital Gains Tax, and a disposal is broad: selling for pounds, swapping one coin for another, spending it, and gifting to anyone but your spouse all count. The annual exempt amount has shrunk to £3,000 for 2025/26, down from £12,300 two years earlier. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above, the rates that took effect on 30 October 2024. Earned crypto is different: mining, staking, employment tokens and some airdrops are income at their pound value on the day you receive them.
Working out the gain is fiddly because HMRC uses Section 104 pooling, with two matching rules on top: buys on the same day as a disposal match first, then anything bought within the following 30 days under the bed-and-breakfasting rule, before the pool is touched. The tax year ends 5 April, and online returns and payment are due by the following 31 January. HMRC already receives exchange data and sends nudge letters, and CARF reporting begins from January 2026. Kryptos imports your UK exchanges and wallets, applies pooling and the 30-day rule for you, keeps income separate from gains, and produces a Self Assessment-ready report.

Crypto tax in the UK: common questions
- Do I have to pay tax on crypto in UK?
Yes. HMRC treats most crypto disposals as taxable events: selling for fiat, swapping one coin for another, spending on goods, or earning yield. Capital-gains rules apply to trading; income rules apply to staking, mining, and airdrops. The exact rate depends on your holding period and bracket.
- Which crypto activities are taxable in UK?
HMRC considers these taxable: disposing crypto for fiat or another crypto, spending crypto on goods or services, receiving staking or mining rewards, getting airdrops, and earning DeFi yield. Transfers between your own wallets aren't taxable. Kryptos auto-classifies each transaction and applies the right treatment.
- What tax forms do I need to file in UK?
For UK returns, Kryptos generates sa100 and sa108. We export them as PDF for record-keeping, CSV for accountants, and tax-software-compatible files where supported. Every line traces back to the source transaction so HMRC questions are answered by your audit trail.
- Does Kryptos support DeFi, NFTs, and staking?
Yes. We support 150+ blockchains and 5,500+ integrations (across DeFi, CEX, wallets, NFTs and on-chain like Uniswap, Aave, Lido, and Curve, plus the major NFT marketplaces). Each is mapped to the right HMRC treatment: LP-token cost basis, NFT mint and sale events, staking-reward income, governance distributions, perpetual funding rates.
- What happens if HMRC audits me?
Every transaction Kryptos classifies has an audit trail back to the source: the cost-basis method applied, the exact disposal sequence, and the on-chain or exchange reference for each line. SOC 2 Type II certified means our controls are independently verified. Most clarification requests resolve from the report itself.
- How much does Kryptos cost in UK?
Free for your first 100 transactions across every supported jurisdiction. Paid plans start when your activity exceeds that and unlock unlimited transactions, multi-year tax reports, and priority support. See pricing for the current breakdown.
