How crypto is taxed

The ATO treats cryptocurrency as property, not money, so most things you do with it are a capital gains tax event: selling for dollars, swapping one coin for another, spending it, or giving it away. The big lever is the holding period. Hold an asset for more than 12 months before you dispose of it and, as an individual, you generally halve the capital gain. That 50% CGT discount turns on tracking the acquisition date of every parcel accurately. Not everything is capital, though: crypto you earn from staking, some airdrops, or as payment for work is ordinary income at its market value on the day it lands.

The financial year ends on 30 June, and if you lodge your own return it is due by 31 October. Since 2019 the ATO has run a data-matching program that collects records from Australian exchanges, so it can compare what you report against what they send it. Kryptos imports from CoinSpot, Swyftx, Binance and your wallets, applies the 50% discount wherever a parcel qualifies, keeps income separate from capital gains, and produces a report you can drop straight into myTax or hand to your accountant.

Questions

Crypto tax in Australia: common questions

Do I have to pay tax on crypto in Australia?

Yes. ATO treats most crypto disposals as taxable events: selling for fiat, swapping one coin for another, spending on goods, or earning yield. Capital-gains rules apply to trading; income rules apply to staking, mining, and airdrops. The exact rate depends on your holding period and bracket.

Which crypto activities are taxable in Australia?

ATO considers these taxable: disposing crypto for fiat or another crypto, spending crypto on goods or services, receiving staking or mining rewards, getting airdrops, and earning DeFi yield. Transfers between your own wallets aren't taxable. Kryptos auto-classifies each transaction and applies the right treatment.

What tax forms do I need to file in Australia?

For Australia returns, Kryptos generates myTax (online self-lodgement) and CGT Schedule (paper). We export them as PDF for record-keeping, CSV for accountants, and tax-software-compatible files where supported. Every line traces back to the source transaction so ATO questions are answered by your audit trail.

Does Kryptos support DeFi, NFTs, and staking?

Yes. We support 150+ blockchains and 5,500+ integrations (across DeFi, CEX, wallets, NFTs and on-chain like Uniswap, Aave, Lido, and Curve, plus the major NFT marketplaces). Each is mapped to the right ATO treatment: LP-token cost basis, NFT mint and sale events, staking-reward income, governance distributions, perpetual funding rates.

What happens if ATO audits me?

Every transaction Kryptos classifies has an audit trail back to the source: the cost-basis method applied, the exact disposal sequence, and the on-chain or exchange reference for each line. SOC 2 Type II certified means our controls are independently verified. Most clarification requests resolve from the report itself.

How much does Kryptos cost in Australia?

Free for your first 100 transactions across every supported jurisdiction. Paid plans start when your activity exceeds that and unlock unlimited transactions, multi-year tax reports, and priority support. See pricing for the current breakdown.
