Coinbase Prime is the institutional platform, and it is a different product from the Coinbase app most people use. If you are an individual with a Coinbase account, this is not your page.
Prime is organised around portfolios: separate trading accounts used to keep strategies, teams or funds apart. That structure is the single most important thing to understand before connecting, because a key can be scoped to just one of them.
Create a narrow key and the import will succeed, look complete, and silently contain a fraction of your activity. Nothing will tell you the rest exists.
What you get out of the box
Choisissez votre méthode d'import.
On Coinbase Prime
- Sign in. You need an administrator, initiator, authorised signatory or full trader role to create a key at all.
- Open the settings menu at the lower left and choose APIs.
- Select Create API Key, then set the name, the access type and an expiry date.
- Choose View access only. Never enable transfer access, which bypasses two-factor checks entirely.
- Complete the security verification, then record the credentials.
On Kryptos
- Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
- From the menu, click Integrations.
- Click Add Integration and search for Coinbase Prime.
- Choose Import using API Keys, paste your key and secret, then click Import Your Transactions.
- To pull a specific date range instead of everything, open Advanced Options before importing.
Good to know
- Keys can be scoped to one portfolio, one business unit, or the whole organisation. Scope it wide enough to cover everything you need reported.
- Keys carry an expiry date you set when you create them, so the connection stops on a date you chose months earlier.
- Transfer access lets a key move funds and bypasses two-factor checks. A tax connection never needs it.
- Custody fees accrue daily and arrive in their own report rather than as transactions, so balances will not reconcile without it.
- Coinbase Pro no longer exists. It closed in 2023 and moved into Coinbase Advanced, which is a different product from Prime.
Why key scope decides whether your report is right
On most exchanges an API key sees the account. On Prime it sees whatever you scoped it to, and the default is narrow.
Portfolios exist to keep strategies, desks and funds apart, which is exactly why a key limited to one of them is dangerous. The connection succeeds. Data arrives. Reports generate. And a portfolio that has been trading all year is not in them, with nothing to signal the omission.
Scope the key to the business unit or the whole organisation, or create one per portfolio and add them all. Then check the portfolio list in Prime against what appears in Kryptos before trusting a number. For how disposals and staking income are treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Every portfolio, not just the first one
Prime separates activity into portfolios, and a key scoped to one returns only that one. The import looks fine and covers part of the business.
Internal transfers that are not disposals
Moving assets between your own portfolios is not a sale. Imported portfolio by portfolio without matching, each move looks like a disposal on one side and an acquisition on the other.
Fees that explain the drift
Custody fees accrue daily and arrive separately from transactions. Without them, balances drift for no visible reason.
Prêt pour l'audit, automatiquement.
Une fois vos wallets et plateformes connectés, générer un rapport fiscal ne prend qu'un clic. Ouvrez Rapports dans le menu, choisissez votre juridiction et téléchargez.
Internal movements are not disposals
Transfers and sweeps between your own portfolios and wallets keep the assets yours. Counted as trades they create gains that never happened, and at institutional size the error is not small.
Staking events and staking income are different things
Staking and unstaking are movements. The rewards they earn are income at the value they had when received. Both need to be present, and they are not the same rows.
Custody fees are a cost, not a disposal
Fees accrue daily against assets under custody and arrive in their own report. They belong in your costs, and their absence is usually what unexplained balance drift turns out to be.
Prime does not issue retail tax forms
This is an institutional platform, so do not expect the summary documents a retail account receives. Your records are the record.
Lecture seule par conception.
- Create the key with read permission only, never withdrawal
- A read-only key can see your history but can't move funds
- Kryptos never asks for your password or login details
- Revoke the key on the exchange at any time and the connection stops
Si la synchronisation échoue.
Your key is probably scoped to one portfolio. Create one at business-unit or organisation level, or add a key per portfolio.
Prime keys expire on the date set when they were created. Create a new one and note the new expiry.
Custody fees accrue daily and are reported separately from transactions. Include the fee report and the gap usually closes.
