Aptos

Aptos is a fast blockchain with its own way of doing things. It isn't built on Ethereum's technology, so wallets, addresses and tokens all work a little differently from what you may be used to.

The part that matters at tax time is how staking works. On most chains, rewards arrive as payments you can point at. On Aptos they get added straight to what you've already staked, roughly every two hours, so there's nothing to find in your history.

Kryptos works your rewards out from how your stake grows instead. It's the only way to get the income figure right, and it's the single biggest reason Aptos is hard to do by hand.

What you get out of the box

APT transfers and the fees you paid
Staking: adding to it, unlocking, and withdrawing
Staking rewards, worked out from how your stake grows
Trading and liquidity positions on Aptos exchanges
NFT mints and marketplace trades
Balances held under both of the token standards Aptos uses

On Aptos

  1. Open your Aptos wallet. Petra, Martian and Pontem all work.
  2. Copy your wallet address.
  3. Copy the whole thing, including any zeros at the start. Aptos sometimes hides those, so the same wallet can look different in different apps.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Aptos.
  4. Click the Aptos icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

How Aptos staking differs

On most chains a staking reward is a payment: it lands in your wallet, it has a date and a value, and you can look it up later. Aptos doesn't work that way. Your rewards are folded into your stake automatically, roughly every two hours, and your balance just grows.

That's fine until you need to report income. There's no list of payments to add up, so the figure has to be reconstructed from how the stake changed over time. Kryptos does that for you. For how staking income is treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the Germany crypto tax guide.

Generating your report

Once your wallets are connected, open Reports from the menu, choose what you need and download it. Kryptos applies the rules for the country you've set.

Rewards you can't see in your history

Aptos adds staking rewards to your stake roughly every two hours instead of sending them to you. That's around a dozen a day, none of which appear as a payment. Kryptos works them out from how your stake grows.

Balances that don't come up short

Aptos is moving tokens from an older standard to a newer one, and during the changeover a holding can sit partly in each. Read only the old one and the balance looks too low. Both get counted.

Junk kept out of your cost basis

On Aptos, anyone can send you an NFT without you agreeing to receive it first, so unwanted ones turn up on their own. They shouldn't be in your numbers.

Staking rewards are income, a dozen times a day

Rewards get added to your stake rather than paid to you, but they're still income at what they were worth when credited. That figure has to come from how your stake grew, because there's no payment to look up.

The lock renews itself

Your stake locks for two weeks at a time and renews on its own. You keep earning while you wait to unlock, and you can only withdraw once it's expired, so the gap between deciding to exit and having spendable APT can cross a tax year end.

Selling or swapping APT is a disposal

The gain or loss is the difference between what the APT cost you and what it was worth when you let it go. Fees you paid are part of the cost of what they paid for.

Lecture seule par conception.

  • Kryptos only ever needs your public wallet address
  • A public address is read-only. It can't move or spend anything
  • We never ask for your recovery phrase or private key
  • Remove a wallet whenever you like, and its data goes with it

Balances don't match what my wallet shows

Check you copied the full address, including any zeros at the start. Aptos sometimes hides them, so one wallet can appear two different ways.

A token balance looks too low

That's usually the changeover between token standards, where a holding sits partly in each. Kryptos counts both.

NFTs I never bought

On Aptos these can be sent to you without your agreement. Exclude them so they stay out of your cost basis.
