Wax

WAX is a network built around NFTs, gaming and collectibles. Your address is a name rather than a string of characters: at most twelve characters, using lowercase letters and the digits 1 to 5.

The token is WAXP. Plenty of exchanges and articles write it as WAX, which is the network's name, so old records can be ambiguous about which is meant.

Transactions are free. Instead of a fee per transaction you reserve capacity in advance, which produces a set of records that look like payments but are not.

What you get out of the box

WAXP transfers in and out of your account
NFT mints, sales and pack openings on AtomicHub and elsewhere
In-game activity and reward tokens from games like Alien Worlds
Staking rewards and Genesis rewards, tracked separately
Capacity staking, rentals and resource purchases
Swaps on Alcor and other WAX exchanges

On WAX

  1. Open your wallet and copy your account name. It is exactly twelve characters, lowercase letters and the digits 1 to 5.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for WAX.
  4. Click the WAX icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Good to know

  • A WAX account has to be created and paid for before it can hold anything. It is not generated from your key the way an Ethereum address is.
  • Staking rewards must be claimed by hand, at most once a day, and they do not compound on their own.
  • If you held Genesis tokens, unstaking them stops their daily rewards permanently. That decision cannot be undone.

Your address is a name you had to buy

On most networks your address falls out of your key: generate a wallet and the address exists immediately, for free, whether or not anyone ever sends to it.

WAX does not work that way. Your address is a name, at most twelve characters, and it is a record on the chain that somebody had to create and pay for. Until that happened, it did not exist and could not receive anything.

Two consequences follow for your records. The name is not derived from your key, so keys can be changed without the name changing, and one account can be controlled by several keys. And the small payment made to create the account is part of the cost of getting started, worth noting if you are tracking a business.

When importing, give Kryptos the account name exactly. Not a wallet nickname, not a display name. For how holdings are reported where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Two reward streams, and one irreversible decision

WAX pays some holders through two entirely separate mechanisms, and people routinely track one and miss the other.

The first is ordinary staking. Lock WAXP, vote, and rewards accrue. They do not arrive on their own: you claim them, at most once every 24 hours, and the claim is when you received them. Rewards also depend on continuing to vote, so the amounts vary with something you do rather than purely with how much you hold. Unstaking takes 72 hours.

The second only applies to holders of Genesis tokens from the network's early days. Each staked Genesis token pays a small amount of WAXP every day across three years, claimed separately from ordinary rewards. So one person can have two independent streams landing on different schedules.

The part worth reading twice: unstaking a Genesis token stops its daily rewards permanently and irreversibly. Not paused for a waiting period, ended. Anyone weighing whether to move Genesis tokens should know that the remaining rewards go with them, and anyone reconstructing an old history should expect a stream that just stops.

An NFT and gaming chain, not a lending one

Worth setting expectations: there is essentially no lending or yield farming on WAX. Across every application on the network the total is a few hundred thousand dollars, and only one exceeds a hundred thousand.

That is not a shortcoming, it is what the chain is for. The activity is NFTs and games: minting, trading packs, playing titles like Alien Worlds, and collecting the tokens those games pay out. Measured by transactions rather than by value locked, WAX is one of the busiest networks anywhere.

For your report that shifts where the work is. You are unlikely to have liquidity positions to reconcile. You are very likely to have thousands of tiny income events from games, each one received at a value on a particular day, plus a long list of NFT purchases and sales. That volume is the reason reconstructing a WAX year by hand is impractical.

Recording game rewards

Games on WAX pay out in very small amounts, very often. Each is income at the value on the day, and a year of play can run to thousands of them.

Keeping two reward streams apart

Ordinary staking rewards and Genesis rewards are claimed separately and behave differently. Mixing them into one figure loses track of which is which.

Trading NFTs and opening packs

Buying, selling and receiving NFTs are ordinary acquisitions and disposals. Opening a pack turns one asset into others, which is worth recording as it happens.

Rewards are income when you claim them

Staking rewards on WAX do not arrive on their own. You claim them, no more than once a day, so the claim date is the receipt date and unclaimed rewards have not yet been received.

Genesis rewards are a separate stream with a hard ending

Genesis tokens pay a small daily amount over three years, claimed separately from ordinary staking. Unstaking a Genesis token ends its rewards permanently, so the decision has a cost beyond the waiting period.

Reserving capacity is not a disposal

Staking to reserve processing capacity, or renting it short-term, spends nothing permanently. The tokens return after a waiting period, so these are not sales even though they look like outgoing transactions.

Storage space is genuinely traded

Unlike capacity, storage on WAX is bought and sold at a floating market price. Selling it for more or less than you paid is a real gain or loss, not an internal transfer.

Free transactions mean no fees to deduct

There is no gas cost on WAX, so unlike most networks there is nothing to add to your cost or subtract from your proceeds.

My rewards are missing

Check whether you have claimed them. WAX rewards accrue but stay unclaimed until you collect them, and they can only be claimed once every 24 hours.

My account name is not accepted

It must be the exact twelve-character account name, lowercase, letters and digits 1 to 5 only. A display name or wallet nickname will not work.

Transactions appear that I did not make

Games make transactions on your behalf as you play, and capacity rentals renew. Most carry no value and Kryptos groups them rather than treating each as an event.
