Checkout

Checkout.com is a payment processor for businesses. When it appears next to a crypto purchase, it handled the card payment; it did not sell you the crypto.

That distinction matters more than it sounds, because recording both the payment and the purchase would count the same transaction twice.

Individuals do not hold accounts with them.

What you get out of the box

Records from the exchange or service you bought through
Bank and card statements evidencing payments
Business receipts of stablecoins, where applicable

Where your records really are

  1. Import the exchange or service where you bought the crypto. That record contains both what you paid and what you received.

Good to know

  • There is no personal account here.
  • A charge under this name is the money side of a purchase already recorded elsewhere.
  • If your business accepts crypto through them, that is a different situation with its own reporting.

The double count to avoid

This is a short page with one job: stopping a specific and surprisingly common mistake.

When you buy crypto with a card, two things are recorded in two places. The exchange or app records that you paid a certain amount of money and received a certain amount of crypto. Separately, a payment processor records that it moved money from your card to that business.

They are two views of one event. The exchange's record is the one that matters, because it contains both halves: what you paid and what you got. That is what establishes the cost of your coins.

The payment processor's record contains only the money moving. Bring it in alongside the exchange record and you have not added information, you have added a duplicate. Depending on how it is classified, that can look like an extra purchase you never made or an unexplained payment that needs accounting for.

So if a charge under this name appears on a statement next to a crypto purchase, the right response is to check it matches something already recorded at the exchange, and then leave it alone. For how cost basis works where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Explaining a card charge

It is the payment leg of a crypto purchase recorded at the platform you bought from.

Avoiding a double count

Importing both the card charge and the exchange purchase would record the same event twice.

A business settling in stablecoins

Where a merchant is paid out in stablecoins, that is business revenue received in crypto.

Do not import the payment leg

If this name turned up on your bank or card statement next to a crypto purchase, it is the money side of that purchase rather than a second event. The crypto itself was recorded wherever you bought it. Counting both would double the transaction.

The purchase record contains everything you need

The exchange's own record shows the fiat paid and the crypto received, which is what establishes cost basis. The card charge adds nothing except the risk of duplication.

Business settlement in stablecoins is revenue

A merchant paid out in stablecoins receives revenue at the value on arrival, and converting it later is a separate disposal.

There is a charge I do not recognise

It is likely the payment behind a crypto purchase. Check your exchange history for a matching date and amount.

Should I add this to my tax report?

No. Adding it alongside the exchange record would count one purchase twice.
