Base

Base is Coinbase's Ethereum layer 2. It uses the same address format as Ethereum, so the address you already hold on Ethereum works here too, and one paste covers everything on the chain.

Fees are paid in ETH. Base has no gas token of its own, which means every transaction costs you a small amount of ETH and each one counts as a disposal where you file.

The part people get wrong is moving money on and off. There is more than one route onto Base, and they leave very different trails behind them.

What you get out of the box

ETH and token transfers on Base
Swaps on Aerodrome, Uniswap and other Base exchanges
Liquidity positions and the rewards they pay out
Lending and borrowing on Aave and Morpho
NFT mints, sales and creator royalties
Bridge movements to and from Ethereum
Zora creator and content coin trades, which settle on Base

On Base

  1. Open your wallet and copy your Base address. It starts with 0x and reads the same as your Ethereum address.
  2. If you use Base Account, the built-in wallet in the Base app, copy that address too. It is a different address from the one in your usual wallet, even on the same phone.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Base.
  4. Click the Base icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Good to know

  • Your Ethereum address and your Base address are the same string. Kryptos tracks them as two chains, because the balances and the history are separate.
  • If you moved funds from your Coinbase balance straight to Base, add your Coinbase account as well. That route skips the bridge, so there is no bridge transaction to match it against.
  • Tokens on Base are their own contracts, not the Ethereum ones. The same token can hold a different price history on each chain.

How money gets onto Base, and why it matters

There are three common routes onto Base and they look nothing alike in your transaction history.

The first is the official bridge. You lock ETH on Ethereum, it appears on Base, and both sides are visible on chain. This is the tidy case: import both wallets and the transfer matches itself.

The second is a withdrawal straight from a Coinbase account. No bridge contract is involved, so on Base all you see is money arriving from an address you do not recognise. Without the exchange account imported, that deposit has no cost attached to it, and selling later can look like pure profit.

The third is a fast bridge. These pay you out of their own pool before the official withdrawal has cleared, taking a fee for the wait. Economically it is a trade, not a transfer, and the funds arrive from an unrelated address. Treating it as a self-transfer understates what the move cost you.

Whichever route you used, the fix is the same: import every account involved, not only the wallet. For how disposals are treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Base and Ethereum share an address, not a history

One address, two chains. That trips people up in both directions.

Some assume that adding their Ethereum wallet covers Base because the address is identical. It does not: the chains hold separate balances and separate histories, and Kryptos needs to read both.

Others assume a token on Base is the same asset as the one on Ethereum. It usually is not. Bridged tokens are new contracts on the layer 2, so if you bought on Ethereum and sold on Base, the purchase and the sale sit in different places and need both wallets present to connect. Our Ethereum integration covers the mainnet side.

Moving in from a Coinbase balance

Sending funds from Coinbase to Base never touches a bridge contract, so nothing on chain explains where the money came from. Add both the exchange account and the wallet and the two halves line up.

Trading on Aerodrome and Uniswap

Swaps, liquidity deposits and the reward tokens that come with them are three different events with three different treatments. Kryptos splits them rather than lumping the lot into one line.

Collecting and minting on Zora

Zora's coins trade on Base, not on Zora's own network. If you create or trade them, the activity lands in this wallet.

Bridging to yourself is not a sale

Moving ETH from Ethereum to Base leaves your ownership unchanged, so it is a transfer rather than a disposal. Import both sides and Kryptos matches them instead of booking a sale on one chain and a purchase on the other.

Withdrawals to Ethereum arrive in stages

A standard withdrawal is started on Base, then proved and finalised on Ethereum about a week later. One movement of money produces several records across two chains, and it is easy to count it twice.

Fast bridges are not transfers

Services that pay you out immediately rather than waiting for the withdrawal window are paying from their own funds. That is a trade with a fee, and the money arrives from a stranger's address, so it does not match your own withdrawal.

Gas is a disposal

Every fee is paid in ETH, and spending ETH is a disposal in most countries. Individually the amounts are tiny. Across a year of active trading they add up to a real number.

  • Kryptos only ever needs your public wallet address
  • A public address is read-only. It can't move or spend anything
  • We never ask for your recovery phrase or private key
  • Remove a wallet whenever you like, and its data goes with it

My balance is missing from the Base app

The Base app's built-in wallet has its own address, separate from the wallet you connect elsewhere. Copy it from inside the app and add it as a second wallet.

A withdrawal to Ethereum looks like a sale

Import your Ethereum wallet as well. With only one side present there is nothing for the outgoing transfer to pair up with, so it reads as a disposal.

My token shows no purchase price

Tokens bridged onto Base are separate contracts from their Ethereum versions. Add the wallet you bought the original in and the cost carries across the bridge.
