Cronos zkEVM

Cronos zkEVM is closing. The network shuts down permanently on 3 June 2027, and anything still on it at that point is lost for good.

Deposits are already switched off. You can withdraw but you cannot bridge anything in, so the only sensible direction is out.

This is a different network from Cronos EVM, which is unaffected and is where most people are moving to.

What you get out of the box

zkCRO transfers and gas
vETH and vUSD holdings and redemptions
Withdrawals back to Cronos EVM and Ethereum
Swaps and lending on the remaining apps
Liquid staking positions

On Cronos zkEVM

  1. Open your wallet and copy your address. It starts with 0x.
  2. Check what you still hold on this network before the deadline. Keep enough zkCRO to pay the fees on your own withdrawals.

On Kryptos

  1. Go to Kryptos.io and sign up with your Google account.
  2. From the menu, click Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration and search for Cronos zkEVM.
  4. Click the Cronos zkEVM icon, then choose Import using Address.
  5. Give the wallet a name, paste your address, and click Import Your Transactions.

Good to know

  • After 3 June 2027 the network is switched off and anything left on it cannot be recovered by anyone.
  • You need zkCRO to pay for your own withdrawal, so do not move all of it out first.
  • Withdrawals take a couple of days, and ETH takes longer again. Do not leave it until the last week.

The deadline, and what happens if you miss it

Cronos zkEVM was announced as closing on 3 June 2026, with a twelve-month wind-down. The network shuts off permanently on 3 June 2027 at 03:00 UTC.

Cronos have been direct about the consequence: any assets still on the network after shutdown are permanently lost. Not frozen, not recoverable through support, not claimable later. The chain stops and whatever is on it stops with it.

Deposits were disabled immediately when the announcement was made, so the network is already one-way. If you have anything here, the only remaining question is when you take it out, and the answer should not be June 2027.

Two practical points people get caught by. First, withdrawals are not instant: expect around two days before you can claim most assets, and considerably longer for ETH, which has a second waiting stage on top. Leaving it to the final week is genuinely risky.

Second, you need zkCRO to pay for your own withdrawals. It is a common mistake to move the valuable assets out first, then find there is nothing left to pay the fee on the rest. Withdraw the gas token last.

Everything moves to Cronos EVM, a separate network that is unaffected by any of this and continues normally.

A gas token that was also an investment

Most networks charge fees in a plain token. Cronos zkEVM charged in zkCRO, which is not plain at all: it represents CRO that has been staked, and it gains value against CRO as those staking rewards accumulate.

That has an odd consequence. Holding zkCRO to pay for transactions meant holding a yield-bearing asset, and its value grew without you doing anything and without any transaction recording it. Anyone who kept a balance here for gas accrued a gain they probably did not notice.

It also means fees are harder to value than usual. A fee is a disposal of the token you paid it in, and here that token was worth a different amount of CRO on every date. Working out what a year of gas cost needs the rate at the time, not a single figure applied across the year.

The same logic applies at both ends of the bridge. Depositing CRO did not just move it: it staked the CRO and gave you a different, yield-bearing asset in return. Whether that counts as a conversion or a transfer is a fair question, and the answer affects whether a gain was realised then or is still waiting. Worth raising with an accountant if the amounts are material. For how disposals are treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Getting out before the deadline

The network closes on 3 June 2027 and assets left behind are unrecoverable. Withdrawals run in stages, so starting early matters.

Working out what gas cost you

zkCRO is a staking token that gains value over time, so a fee paid last year cost a different amount in real terms from the same fee today.

Redeeming vETH and vUSD

Both stopped earning after the shutdown was announced but can still be redeemed until the network closes.

Assets left behind become a loss with a known date

Anything still on the network after 3 June 2027 is permanently inaccessible. That is unusual in being a worthless-asset event you can see coming, and it is much easier to avoid than to claim.

Every fee disposed of an appreciating asset

zkCRO is not a plain gas token. It represents staked CRO and gains value over time, so each fee was a disposal of an asset with a changing price rather than a flat cost.

Bridging in was a conversion, not a transfer

Depositing CRO here staked it and produced a different, yield-bearing asset. That is arguably a conversion rather than a like-for-like move, and the same question applies on the way out.

vUSD yield was claimed, so it was income on the claim date

Unlike zkCRO, which accrued silently, vUSD yield had to be collected. Each collection was a receipt at that day's value.

Withdrawals produce several records each

Getting an asset out takes an initiation and a later claim, with ETH taking longer still. One exit, several transactions.

I cannot bridge anything in

Deposits were switched off when the shutdown was announced. Withdrawals still work, and that is the only direction available now.

I have no zkCRO to pay for my withdrawal

You need a small amount of zkCRO to cover fees. If you have moved it all out, you will need to acquire a little to get the rest of your assets off.

My vETH and vUSD stopped earning

That is expected. Yield stopped shortly after the shutdown was announced, though both can still be redeemed until the network closes.
