Bithumb Global

Bithumb Global has gone. Every address it used is dead: one refuses connections, one returns an error, one cannot find its own server. There is no site, no support and no way to export anything.

It should not be confused with Bithumb Korea, which is a different company and still operating. Only the international arm closed.

So this page is about rebuilding a history from the outside, because nothing can be retrieved from the inside.

What you get out of the box

On-chain deposits to and withdrawals from the exchange
Bank records of money sent or received
Exports and screenshots you saved before it closed
Manual entries reconstructed from email confirmations

Rebuilding your history

  1. Import the wallets you withdrew to. Every withdrawal from the exchange is recorded permanently on the chain that received it.
  2. Import the wallets you deposited from. Those transfers show what you sent in and when.
  3. Add your bank records for any money you sent or received.
  4. Add anything you exported or saved before it closed.

On Kryptos

  1. Log in to Kryptos.
  2. Go to Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration, then search for and select Bithumb Global.
  4. Click the Bithumb Global icon and choose Upload CSV.
  5. Upload the file. Kryptos reads it and categorises the transactions for you.

Good to know

  • Bithumb Korea is a separate, operating company. Only the international arm closed.
  • Deposits and withdrawals are on the blockchain and survive the exchange, even though trades do not.
  • Trades made inside the exchange left no public record, so those need whatever you kept yourself.

Three things called Bithumb

Before anything else, make sure you are looking at the right company, because at least three related names circulate and only one of them closed.

Bithumb Korea is a large, operating Korean exchange. It requires Korean identity verification and a Korean bank account, and it is still trading. If you have an account with a Korean bank linked to it, this page does not apply to you.

Bithumb Global, sometimes later called BitGlobal, was the separate international arm for customers outside Korea. That is the one that closed, and every address it used is now dead.

There is also a Hong Kong trust company with a similar name involved in custody arrangements for a wrapped bitcoin product, which is a different business again.

We are not going to give you a shutdown date, because the available accounts contradict each other. Reports point to 2023, but there are later accounts of the site still being reachable, and no announcement from the company was ever published that we can find. What is certain is that it is gone now.

For rebuilding your records, the good news is that the movements in and out are not lost. Every deposit and withdrawal happened on a blockchain and is recorded there permanently, so importing the wallets at either end recovers the dates and amounts. What is lost is the trading in between, which only ever existed on the exchange's own systems. For how losses on inaccessible assets are treated, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

Recovering the deposits and withdrawals

Those movements are permanently on chain. Importing the wallets at either end recovers dates and amounts even with the exchange gone.

Reconstructing trades you cannot retrieve

Trading inside an exchange leaves no public trace. Old email confirmations and anything you exported are the only source.

Establishing what was lost

If a balance was stranded when it closed, the deposits show what went in and the withdrawals show what came back out.

Stranded balances are a loss question

Anything still on the exchange when it stopped is not recoverable. Whether that is a deductible loss depends on where you file and usually on evidencing what you held.

Deposits and withdrawals survive on chain

Even with the exchange gone, the transfers in and out are recorded permanently. That establishes both what you sent and what you got back.

Trades are the hard part

Activity inside an exchange is private to that exchange. With no export, only your own records reconstruct it.

The difference between what went in and what came out matters

Where trades cannot be recovered, the gap between deposits and withdrawals is evidence of what happened in between, and it is better than nothing.

Is Bithumb closed?

Bithumb Korea is operating. The separate international arm, Bithumb Global, is the one that closed.

Can I still export my data?

No. All of its addresses are dead, with no support channel.

I never withdrew my balance

Then it is stranded. Your deposit records evidence what you put in, which is the starting point for any claim.
