Wirex

Wirex is a card and account product rather than an exchange. You hold balances with it, in ordinary currencies and in crypto, and you spend from them with a card.

That makes it one of the few services in this group where you genuinely hold something, and it produces the most under-reported event in crypto: paying for things with crypto.

There is also a change to know about. Crypto features were removed from the older Wirex app for customers in Europe, the UK and Australia on 30 June 2026.

What you get out of the box

  3. Download it as CSV, then repeat for each account you hold. Statements come out one account at a time.

On Kryptos

  1. Log in to Kryptos.
  2. Go to Integrations.
  3. Click Add Integration, then search for and select Wirex.
  4. Click the Wirex icon and choose Upload CSV.
  5. Upload the file. Kryptos reads it and categorises the transactions for you.

Good to know

  • Statements are generated per account, so a user with several currencies has several exports to collect.
  • Every card payment made from a crypto balance is a disposal of that crypto.
  • Cashback was historically paid in WXT, which is a token with a price of its own rather than a cash rebate.

Spending crypto is selling crypto

This is the thing that catches Wirex users, and it catches them at scale.

When you pay for something with a card funded from a crypto balance, the crypto is sold to make the payment. To you it felt like buying a sandwich. For tax it is a disposal, measured at the value of the purchase against whatever you originally paid for those coins.

The problem is volume. Nobody makes hundreds of trades a year deliberately, but plenty of people make hundreds of card payments. Somebody using a crypto-funded card for daily spending has generated a disposal for every coffee, every fare and every online order, each with its own date, its own value and its own small gain or loss.

It is genuinely impractical to reconstruct by hand, which is why the statements matter. Note that they come out one account at a time, so if you hold several currencies you have several exports to gather rather than one.

Two related things also count. Converting crypto into a currency balance before spending is itself a disposal, at that moment rather than at the till. And cashback paid in WXT is not a rebate in the ordinary sense: it is a token with its own price, received as income at that day's value, which then becomes the cost you measure against when you eventually sell it. For how disposals are treated where you file, see the USA crypto tax guide or the UK crypto tax guide.

What changed in 2026

Wirex moved customers onto a new app during 2026, and the transition produced events that belong on this year's return.

For customers in Europe, the UK and Australia, crypto features were removed from the older app on 30 June 2026. That covered crypto deposits and withdrawals, exchanges between crypto and currencies, spending from crypto balances with the card, and the cashback programme.

Anyone who moved to the newer app kept their balances. Anyone who did not had their savings accounts closed and the funds returned to their main balance. That closure is a real dated event, and where it involved converting crypto it was a disposal that the user did not choose to make.

Cashback also changed shape during 2026, moving away from being paid in WXT toward rewards valued in ordinary currency. If your rewards changed character partway through the year, both patterns need handling, because a token received as income and a cash-valued reward are not the same thing to record.

Accounting for card spending

Paying with a card funded by crypto sells that crypto at the moment of purchase. A card used daily produces hundreds of disposals a year.

Recording cashback paid in a token

Rewards paid in WXT are income at the value when received, and that value becomes the cost of the tokens.

Handling the 2026 changes

The move off the older app involved account closures and conversions for many users, all of which happened on dates that belong in this tax year.

Every card payment from crypto is a disposal

Buying a coffee with a crypto-funded card sells crypto at that moment, at the value of the purchase. This is the single most under-reported thing in consumer crypto, because it does not feel like trading.

Cashback in a token is income, then a holding

Rewards paid in WXT are received at that day's value, which is income. That same value becomes the cost of the WXT, so selling it later is a separate gain or loss.

The 2026 transition produced real events

Crypto features ended in the older app for Europe, the UK and Australia on 30 June 2026. Savings accounts were closed and funds returned for anyone who did not move across, which is a dated event rather than an administrative footnote.

Topping up before spending is its own disposal

Converting crypto into a currency balance before spending it disposes of the crypto at that point, separately from the purchase that follows.

My statement only covers one account

That is how they work. Generate one per account and combine them.

My crypto features stopped working

Crypto was removed from the older app for Europe, the UK and Australia on 30 June 2026. Moving to the newer app restores them.

My savings account was closed

Accounts were closed and balances returned for customers who did not move across before the deadline.
